Procedures for treating gum disease.
Gum disease is a chronic build up of bacteria around the gums and the teeth. This can occur at any age and most of the times is painless and needs regular check ups with the periodontist to prevent its occurrence. Some of the warning signs include: red, swollen and bleeding gums, bad breath or loose teeth. To correct this problem your periodontist may recommend a scaling and root planning procedure or, in more advanced cases, a surgical procedure.
Scaling and root planning is a non surgical procedure when removal of the plaque and hard deposits (tartar) from the teeth is employed. Sometimes a bite adjustment and usage of locally delivered antibiotics may be recommended.
If a satisfactory response is not obtained with the non surgical procedures, if indicated, a surgical procedure that allows the surgeon access to the diseased areas and meticulously clean root surfaces and correct any gum or bone defects will be recommended.
